Throughout this year I have tried to attend as many seminars and conferences as I can, through university of wollongong, or through my own research. Many people have been asking me why I have been going to them. A lot of the questions have been, “is it for your degree… for work…so, why?” And sometimes I ask myself why too. Who is it really benefiting? Well, the answer to that one is kind of easy… me! Selfish i know. But in all honesty sometimes its needed, and education is beautiful. With every seminar or conference i have been to i have widen my knowledge and education of the world, of cultures, of events in the world that i had no idea about. I have been made of aware of so many things that most people dont get the opportunity to hear about.
Now, the reason for this post is to quickly sum up the conferences i have attended in the past few months. I think I have already wrote about a few so there wont be much need to go in depth with them all.
Firstly, the Catholic Care seminar with Dr. Michael Carr- Gregg at St Mary’s in Wollongong. This seminar was a great opportunity, and I came across it when looking for conferences in the area. Michael Carr-Gregg is an amazing speaker and I loved hearing what he had to say. The one night, near the end of June, consisted of 3 sections and talked about mental health in children, psychology and statistics, along with resources to help in providing awareness and getting help with mental illness. The information gathered in the three sections has been wonderful, and I think it will be wonderful to use in further life. My boss, Pene Mortimer, also attended the conference and found it as wonderful as well (or so she had me believe.)
Secondly, I attended the Networking at 5 event through University of Wollongong. This event, in August, really helped with gaining confidence in interviewing skills, more than anything else. The event, along with 2 workshops (one of which i could not attend) focused on how to “network” and provide connections with businesses in the local area. The event was wonderful in providing the information in techniques of introducing yourself, speaking and feedback to business people, and learning how to make an elevator pitch. The event was wonderful and I really enjoyed speaking to business people and those involved in areas at the University.
Thirdly, was the Student for Student Leadership Conference at the University of Wollongong. This conference was amazing, with amazing keynote speakers. The theme of the conference was THE POWER OF PASSION, and focused on social activism and creating change in the world. The speakers (keynote and workshop that i heard) consisted of:
- Loki Ball
- Neil Preston
- chantelle baxter
- Rev Maio you
- luke geary
- dr. patty rose
- ehon chan
- sophie coles
There were a list of other speakers, which i unfortunately could not get to hear. But the speakers that i did hear were wonderful. Each speaker talked of leadership, empowerment, creativity, and responsibility which were the sub themes of the conference. The conference team were wonderful and made the event so enjoyable. I have written a report/ recount of the conference so if you are interested in reading it please let me know
Lastly, the two conferences I am attending, this week and next are with iConnect with University of Wollongong. The first seminar this week was with Jade Kennedy speaking of indigenous culture around the local area and what country means. His beautiful talk about his culture and the local area was amazing and I really enjoyed listening, but also learning about the culture. Next week’s seminar is with Dr. Pam Aboula talking about her experiences in Kenya which I am really looking forward to.
Though these few conferences and Seminars dont seem much, they have taken up a few days/ weeks of my year in amongst university and work.
This year I have had the great opportunity to be involved in AIME: Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experimence. The goal of AIME is have university students mentoring indigenous high school students in gaining confidence in their culture/ Identity to finish school and gain success in life. The experience has been wonderful. It runs once a week through school term and has a structure of activities each week that incorporate all the themes of AIME.
I have also been involved in the 40 hour famine, in which i raised $435.00 for World Vision. The 40 hours over a weekend in August, fell very nicely on my daughters 2nd birthday, ending very conveniently in the middle of her birthday.
Through all these events and organisations I have made this year a very full on and educational year for myself. All these conferences and seminars have made my mind boggle and has lit a motivational fire in me to do something with my life. To make a difference. To create a change and do something good. I want to make a legacy and be remembered. In the S4S conference it was asked “what will you do?” and if I died tomorrow would I be happy with what I have done with my life. And the answer… is a big no. I have not done everything I want to do. I have so much more to do with my life that I havent had the chance (or the motivation?) to do yet.
The challenge i set you now is…
What are you going to do with your life to make a change? What steps are you taking to better yourself? I know my steps, what are yours?
